GPT-5 isn’t as good as GPT-4o when it comes to emotional support, but that changes today.
As first spotted by BleepingComputer, ChatGPT has rolled out a new update to its GPT-5 instant model.
This model update allows GPT-5 to quickly understand and support those who are not having a good time emotionally.
“When GPT-5 detects you’re having distress. The model is trained to more accurately detect and respond to potential signs of mental and emotional distress,” OpenAI noted.
OpenAI developed the model with help from mental health experts.
GPT now automatically tries to push you towards real-world crisis resources when appropriate, while still using language that feels supportive and grounding.
GPT-5 was disliked by GPT-4 users because it felt too practical when they were expecting emotional support.
OpenAI says these changes will still keep GPT-5 supportive and grounded.
“When GPT-5 Auto or a non-reasoning model is selected, we’ll instead route these conversations to GPT-5 Instant to more quickly provide helpful and beneficial responses,” OpenAI explained.
“ChatGPT will continue to tell users which model is active when asked.”
This update to GPT-5 Instant is starting to roll out to CatGPT users today.
