[..] Microsoft did not send me any emails or prior warnings. I was unable to reach a human. [..] I cannot publish Windows updates. Linux and macOS updates can still be done but Windows is the platform used by the majority of users and so the inability to deliver Windows releases is a major blow to the project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same experience was shared by developers behind other widely used projects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EdgeSecurity\/status\/2041872931576299888\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WireGuard<\/a> maintainer <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=47687884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jason A. Donenfeld<\/a> and the dev teams for <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/windscribecom\/status\/2041929519628443943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Windscribe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PassMarkInc\/status\/2041996392072409191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MemTest86<\/a>, all of whom said they&#8217;ve been trying to contact a human at Microsoft Support for weeks without success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No warning at all, no notification. One day I sign in to publish an update, and yikes, account suspended. Currently undergoing some sort of 60 days appeals process, but who knows,&#8221; Donenfeld said. &#8220;That&#8217;s kind of crazy: what if there were some critical RCE in WireGuard, being exploited in the wild, and I needed to update users immediately?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bleepstatic.com\/images\/news\/u\/1109292\/2026\/WireGuard_Microsoft_account_suspensin.jpg\" width=\"646\" alt=\"Microsoft suspends dev accounts for high-profile open source projects\"><figcaption><em>Microsoft account suspension message (Jason A. Donenfeld)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8203;However, after <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/08\/wireguard-vpn-developer-cant-ship-software-updates-after-microsoft-locks-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TechCrunch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/08\/veracrypt-encryption-software-windows-microsoft-lock-boot-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> on the issue on Wednesday, Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman said the developer accounts were automatically suspended because they failed the &#8220;mandatory account verification for all partners in the Windows Hardware Program who have not completed account verification since April 2024&#8221; that the company had been emailing &#8220;everyone&#8221; about since October 2025.<\/p>\n<p>As explained in a <a href=\"http:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/hardware-dev-center\/action-required-account-verification-for-windows-hardware-program-begins-october\/4455452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hardware Dev Center article published on October 1<\/a>, the account verification process began on October 16 and would trigger an automatic suspension from the Windows Hardware Program if partners failed to complete it within 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Account verification for the Windows Hardware Program has now concluded,&#8221; Microsoft said in a March 30 update. &#8220;Accounts that did not successfully complete account verification and received a Rejected verification status have been suspended from the Windows Hardware Program, and submissions from these accounts are no longer permitted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While BleepingComputer has yet to receive a reply after reaching out to a Microsoft spokesperson for more details, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/shanselman\/status\/2041974138253013205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hanselman said<\/a> that the issue will be addressed &#8220;in a bit&#8221; but didn&#8217;t share why the project maintainers weren&#8217;t notified of the suspension.<\/p>\n<p>This was confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/p\/veracrypt\/discussion\/general\/thread\/9620d7a4b3\/#0022\/64ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Idrassi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/windscribecom\/status\/2042038700666757583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Windscribe<\/a>, with the former confirming that Hanselman reached out to help reinstate the suspended Partner Center account and stating that &#8220;social media postings and interview with journalists helped trigger a response from Microsoft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<style> .ia_ad {     background-color: #f0f6ff;
